Kebbi PDP Rejects Turaki as Northern Consensus Candidate for National Chairman

The Kebbi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the reported selection of former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, as the Northern consensus candidate for the position of PDP National Chairman.

The party made its position known after an emergency meeting held in Birnin Kebbi on Saturday, where members stated that they were neither consulted nor in agreement with the decision allegedly taken by some Northern PDP governors.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the State Publicity Secretary, Sani Dododo, said the Kebbi PDP supports the stance of North West PDP stakeholders, who had earlier opposed the endorsement.

He explained that Turaki had not shown active involvement in party affairs at the state level, noting that his nomination came as a surprise to many party members.According to the statement, the former minister never met with Kebbi PDP leaders or declared his intention to contest the position before the reported endorsement.

The party maintained that such a decision should follow due consultation and respect for the party’s zoning principles.The Kebbi PDP also called for each state chapter to have the freedom to nominate candidates in line with established internal arrangements.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to fairness and collective decision-making as preparations for the next national convention continue.

The race for the PDP National Chairman position has become more intense as discussions continue among Northern governors and stakeholders on who should succeed the current leadership.

The chairmanship seat is expected to be zoned to the North as part of the party’s rotational arrangement.Recent reports that some Northern governors had backed Turaki as a consensus candidate have stirred discontent across several state chapters, particularly in the North West.

Many party members believe the decision was reached without adequate consultation, raising concerns about internal unity as the PDP positions itself for the 2027 general elections.
