PDP Warns INEC, Security Agencies Ahead of National Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the judiciary to maintain fairness and professionalism before, during, and after its upcoming national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In a statement issued by its Convention Media and Publicity Sub-Committee and made available to reporters in Bauchi, the party called for patriotism from all relevant institutions to ensure a peaceful and transparent convention.

The PDP expressed concern over alleged moves by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to influence or disrupt the exercise through political or judicial means.

The party claimed that certain individuals within and outside its ranks were working with the APC to create instability and weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.It accused these individuals of pursuing personal interests at the expense of internal unity, warning that such actions would have consequences.

The statement also raised concern about possible misuse of security agencies, particularly the police, to obstruct delegates during the event. The party cautioned that such interference could damage public trust and limit democratic freedom.

According to the PDP, democracy can only thrive when opposition parties are allowed to function freely without intimidation. It warned that using state institutions to silence opposition voices could threaten the nation’s democratic foundation.

The party reaffirmed its confidence in the newly appointed INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, expressing hope that his leadership would promote fairness. It also urged national institutions to act in the interest of Nigeria rather than political parties.

The PDP encouraged its members to remain united and resist attempts to disrupt the convention, describing the gathering as an important step toward strengthening democracy.

It also noted that its leadership was engaging civil society organizations and international partners to ensure a credible and peaceful process.
