The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) has reported that 17 out of the 23 local government areas in the state are currently experiencing attacks by herders.
The agency’s Executive Secretary, James Iorpuu, disclosed this on Wednesday in Makurdi while speaking to journalists. According to him, only Ogbadibo, Ohimini, Konshisha, Gboko, Ushongo, and one other local government have not been affected by the violence.
Iorpuu, who also serves as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, explained that the continuous attacks have displaced hundreds of thousands of residents across the state. Many of the victims, he noted, have lost their homes, means of livelihood, and financial stability as a result of the crisis.
He urged the Federal Government to consider dredging the Rivers Benue and Niger to prevent the recurring issue of flooding that has continued to affect the state yearly. He stated that such an intervention would help reduce the impact of natural disasters in the area.
Speaking about a recent conference of State Emergency Management Agencies held in Lagos, Iorpuu said the meeting provided an opportunity for emergency officers to gain broader knowledge on effective disaster management and response strategies.
He also praised the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia, noting that his performance has been commendable since assuming office. According to him, the governor has managed the state’s finances responsibly and has not taken loans from any financial institution since he came into power.
Iorpuu added that the group known as “Divine Mandate,” which supported Alia’s emergence as governor in 2023, remains proud of his achievements so far. He mentioned that preparations are ongoing for the launch of the second phase of the group’s activities towards the end of the year to further promote the governor ahead of the 2027 election.
He cautioned residents against individuals who expect the state’s funds to be shared among a few persons, saying such actions would work against the collective development of Benue people.
The situation in Benue has continued to raise concern as several communities remain under threat from herders, leaving many families displaced and struggling to survive.
