Former National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sunday Udeh-Okoye, has officially resigned from the party, citing the loss of its founding values as his reason for leaving.
In a resignation letter sent to his Agbogugu Ward Chairman in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Udeh-Okoye said the PDP no longer upholds the principles of unity, justice, and equity that once defined it.
He thanked the party for the platform it provided throughout his political journey, which included serving as a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, National Youth Leader, and later as National Secretary.
According to Udeh-Okoye, the PDP that once represented hope for Nigeria’s democracy has drifted away from its moral and ideological roots.
He added that he now plans to begin what he described as a progressive journey to restore the true values of democracy, accountability, and service to the people — ideals he believes the party has abandoned.
Although he did not reveal his next political step, his exit comes amid a series of defections by prominent PDP figures in the Southeast, many of whom have expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s internal divisions and leadership challenges.
Udeh-Okoye was previously nominated by the PDP’s South East Zonal Working Committee to replace Senator Sam Anyanwu, who left his position to contest the Imo governorship election, but his nomination was rejected by the party’s leadership.
