The Federal Government has launched a nationwide audit of public and private buildings following the growing number of fire incidents across major cities in Nigeria. The move aims to enforce compliance with fire safety regulations and prevent further loss of lives and property.
The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Olumode Adeyemi Samuel, announced the initiative during the inauguration of a Special Task Force on Public and Private Building Audit held at the Service Headquarters in Abuja.He explained that the decision came after recent fire disasters, including the Afriland Tower fire in Lagos and several plaza fires in Abuja.
The Task Force is expected to identify high-risk buildings, inspect their safety compliance levels, and provide recommendations for stricter enforcement and policy improvement.The team will be led by Assistant Controller General Bolarinde Tajudeen Muhammed, who heads the department of Inspection, Investigation, and Enforcement.
Other members are drawn from the legal, operations, and public relations units of the Fire Service.The Federal Fire Service urged building owners and managers, especially those operating high-rise and public facilities, to cooperate with the audit exercise.
Adeyemi also restated the Service’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and infrastructure, adding that prevention through strict safety compliance has become a national priority.
