The Federal Government has explained that no prisoner has been released yet under the recent Presidential Prerogative of Mercy granted by President Bola Tinubu, as the process is still undergoing administrative review.
Earlier reports indicated that the President had approved a pardon for 175 people, including notable figures such as Sir Herbert Macaulay, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and Major General Mamman Vatsa, following recommendations from the Council of State.
The list also included Maryam Sanda, who was convicted in 2020 for the murder of her husband, along with several other inmates whose sentences were either reduced or commuted.
However, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), explained that the exercise has not reached the final stage where formal instruments of release would be issued.
He stated that the names of the beneficiaries are still being verified to ensure that all listed individuals meet the required legal and procedural standards.
According to him, the government is following due process to avoid any mistakes in the implementation of the clemency exercise. He noted that once the review is completed and the final documents are signed, the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service will be directed to carry out the release.
Fagbemi added that the review phase is a normal part of the process and shows the government’s commitment to due process and accountability. He appreciated the public for paying attention to the development and assured that once all verifications are completed, the public would be informed.
He maintained that the exercise is progressing according to law and that there has been no delay in carrying out the President’s directive.
