Favour Michael Kanu, the wife of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has appealed to Justice James Omotosho of the Abuja High Court not to allow her husband die while being held by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The appeal was made on Thursday through an open letter addressed to the presiding judge, where she expressed deep concern over her husband’s worsening health condition and the handling of his medical situation by the authorities.
Mrs. Kanu faulted the medical report presented by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) panel, which stated that her husband was fit and not suffering from any life-threatening illness.
She questioned the authenticity of the report and accused the prosecution of using it to delay justice.According to her, Nnamdi Kanu’s health has deteriorated due to prolonged detention, alleged torture, and poor medical attention at the DSS facility.
She insisted that he urgently needs medical treatment outside the custody of the security agency, preferably in a well-equipped hospital in Abuja.She also expressed frustration over the slow pace of the trial, which she said had lost the “accelerated hearing” once promised by the court.
The delays, she noted, have caused her husband to continue suffering in detention despite his failing health.Mrs. Kanu questioned the process through which the medical report was obtained and described it as unprofessional.
She accused the DSS of presenting a fabricated report and the court of failing to act swiftly despite knowing the poor state of the nation’s medical system.In her appeal, she reminded the judge of his earlier statement that Kanu must be healthy to stand trial and asked why his current condition was being ignored.
She warned that her husband’s life was at risk if he continued to remain in the DSS facility without proper medical care.
The IPOB leader, who has been in detention since his arrest and return to Nigeria in 2021, continues to face terrorism-related charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja.lpl0
