A Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has nullified the 2024 local government election that produced the 13 council chairmen and their councillors in the state.
The court ruled on Tuesday that the election conducted by the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) was unconstitutional and breached the provisions of the Electoral Act.
According to information obtained by Daily Post, the judgment followed findings that the commission failed to comply with due process in the conduct of the election, rendering the outcome invalid.
This is not the first time the court has intervened in Ebonyi’s local government polls. In August 2022, a previous election was also annulled for the same procedural violations, with the court declaring it unlawful and void.
With the latest decision, the tenure of the current chairmen and councillors has been set aside, creating a fresh legal and administrative vacuum in the local councils.
