Kogi SIEC Sets October 17, for Local Government Elections

The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission has announced October 17, 2026, as the date for local government elections across the state.

The chairman of the commission, Nderi Mamman, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Wednesday in Lokoja.He explained that the election would cover chairmanship and councillorship positions across the 21 local government areas and 239 wards in the state.

Mamman said the notice of election aligns with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which requires the publication of election notice at least 360 days before the scheduled date.

He stated that the full timetable and schedule of activities—including party primaries, submission of candidates’ lists, publication of nominated candidates, and campaign timelines—will be made public on October 24.

According to him, only political parties registered and recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission are eligible to present candidates for the election, in accordance with the Electoral Act and KOSIEC laws.

Mamman called on political parties, aspirants, and other stakeholders to comply with all election regulations to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible exercise.

Stakeholders at the meeting commended the commission for releasing the notice early and urged continuous voter education and public awareness campaigns to promote participation and ensure a fair process.
