The Lagos State Police Command has declared activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore wanted for allegedly planning to disrupt public order in Lagos. The announcement came after intelligence indicated that Sowore, who leads the “Take It Back Movement,” intended to stage protests that could block major roads, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Lekki Tollgate, and Freedom Park.
The state Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, revealed that Sowore ignored previous warnings from the police against mobilising demonstrations over the recent demolition of buildings in Oworonshoki. Authorities said the planned protests could create serious traffic disruptions and pose risks to public safety.
Police have already arrested 13 individuals believed to be connected to the planned demonstrations. Sowore reportedly fled, and security forces have been deployed to key highways and bridges, with temporary roadblocks and diversions put in place to prevent potential disturbances.
The commissioner said the Third Mainland Bridge could not safely accommodate stationary crowds, adding that the protests could have structural and safety implications. He assured Lagos residents that affected citizens had received compensation following the demolitions and urged the public to continue their normal activities without fear.
Authorities also stated that investigations are ongoing to identify those sponsoring or supporting the planned protest. Police officials reassured the public that any attempts to disrupt peace or block public roads would be met with full legal consequences.
The Lagos Police Command reiterated its commitment to upholding law and order while cautioning that freedom of expression should not endanger lives or public infrastructure.
