Former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola has indicated that the choice of political party for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s 2026 re-election campaign will be made after Adeleke returns from an overseas trip. Amid speculation about potential defections, Oyinlola pointed to the Accord party as a viable platform for the governor.
He also noted that any move to another party would depend on whether it aligns with his personal and political beliefs, suggesting that he may not automatically follow Adeleke if the chosen party does not match their principles. Oyinlola mentioned past considerations of joining the APC but dismissed the idea due to his past experiences and dissatisfaction with the party.
The ongoing challenges in the PDP, particularly at the national level, may influence Adeleke to explore alternatives for his re-election bid. Oyinlola indicated that discussions with party stakeholders in Osun would continue once the governor returns, after which the public will be informed of their decision.
Additionally, Oyinlola reported progress in resolving internal disputes in several state chapters of the PDP, stating that conflicts in four out of six affected states have been settled. He also expressed concerns about the state of Nigeria’s economy and rising insecurity, suggesting that governance issues may shape political choices.
Adeleke has not yet officially announced the party he will contest under for the 2026 governorship election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set December 15, 2025, as the deadline for submitting candidates’ names for the August 8, 2026, Osun State governorship election.
