The Kano State Government has asked security agencies to arrest former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje following concerns raised during the state’s executive council meeting.
The call came after the Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, briefed journalists in Kano on the council’s position. He said the government reached this decision after Ganduje recently made remarks about forming a militia group in the state. He explained that less than two days after those remarks, armed men entered a community in Kano and abducted several residents, raising fresh fears among the people.
The commissioner said the government believes the safety of citizens must be protected at all cost and that the former governor’s statements were viewed as dangerous, especially at a time when the state is working to reduce crime and calm tension.
He also said the government noted the ongoing steps taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen security in Kano and across the country. According to him, the state will continue to work with federal authorities to prevent further attacks and ensure that people can live without fear.
The matter has added to the long-running friction between the current administration and the former governor, and many residents are watching closely to see how security agencies will respond to the state government’s request.
