Satguru Maharaj Ji, the founder of the One Love Family, said on Wednesday that he is ready to help secure the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, if activities linked to Biafra radio and the sit-at-home order come to an end. He spoke during an interview on his group’s radio station, where he explained the conditions he believes must be met before any political solution can work.
He said Kanu’s case was tied to terrorism charges that normally carry the death penalty under the law, and that the only reason he is still alive is because the government decided not to apply the full weight of the punishment. Maharaj Ji said Kanu’s fate can now only be settled through a political process, and that those calling for his release must be willing to take practical steps and not rely on empty appeals.
In his view, supporters of Kanu should stop running the Biafra radio channel and end the sit-at-home directive that has disrupted life in the South-East. He added that elders from the region should quietly engage the President and help explain their demands in a calm and organised way. He also said the East must stop the rumour that the region is being prepared for forced Islamisation, insisting that such claims only create more tension.
Maharaj Ji said he is ready to use his influence once these steps are taken, and he believes that Kanu will regain his freedom if the right conditions are met. He joins other public figures, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, who are also pushing for a political settlement that will lead to Kanu’s release.
Governor Otti had visited Kanu at the Sokoto prison before meeting President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Tuesday, a move many believe is part of the continued efforts to secure Kanu’s freedom. Kanu is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted on multiple counts of terrorism. The court also gave him additional jail terms ranging from five to twenty years on other counts, all without an option of fine.
Maharaj Ji assured people in the South-East that all efforts are still ongoing and that the case is not closed. He said those who want Kanu freed must be prepared to show real commitment, adding that he is willing to play his part once the required changes are made.
