Former Central Bank of Nigeria governor Godwin Emefiele has responded to an online report accusing him of funding terrorism in the country. The claim spread across social media earlier in the week, leading him to issue a statement through his media team.
The former CBN boss said the story did not come from any known security agency and insisted it was created to damage his image at a time when he is already dealing with public attention over his time in office. He noted that the allegation was made without evidence and described it as part of a wider attempt to pull him down.
The rumour continued to circulate as some platforms repeated the claim, but Emefiele maintained that he has never taken part in any activity that threatens the safety of the country. He called on Nigerians to ignore the report and avoid spreading false information.
He also said his legal advisers are studying the issue while he works to defend his name. According to him, those behind the claim are only trying to mislead the public and create confusion around his ongoing matters.
Emefiele stated that he will keep taking steps through legal channels to protect his reputation as the situation develops.
