President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday received the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jr., during a courtesy visit at the National Assembly in Abuja. The meeting was held as part of ongoing engagement between both countries on political, economic, and security matters.
The discussions focused on improving diplomatic ties and cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, especially in areas related to democracy, lawmaking, and development. Both sides expressed interest in sustaining regular engagement and working together on issues of mutual concern.
Akpabio spoke on the long relationship between Nigeria and the United States, noting that Nigeria’s democratic system draws from the American model and should be protected and strengthened. He also acknowledged the role of cooperation between both countries over the years and welcomed continued dialogue.
The US Ambassador explained that the visit was meant to assess the state of relations between both nations and identify ways to deepen cooperation. He added that the United States remains interested in understanding the priorities of the Nigerian Senate and maintaining engagement on democratic and development goals.
The meeting took place amid recent diplomatic tension following the decision by the United States to place Nigeria on a watch list over security and religious freedom concerns. Nigerian authorities have rejected claims that the security crisis is based on religion, stating that violence affects all communities and should not be misrepresented.
The federal government has also advised foreign partners to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and support cooperative efforts aimed at tackling insecurity and violent extremism across the country.
