Organised labour on Wednesday went ahead with a protest in Lagos over growing insecurity, even after union leaders held late-night discussions with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja.
Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress assembled early in the day in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, and marched through key routes while security agencies monitored the situation. The protest followed widespread concerns among workers about daily threats to safety and the lack of visible improvement on the ground.
The action came just hours after labour leaders met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa. The meeting was aimed at easing tension and addressing labour’s worries about insecurity across the country. However, the congress said the discussions did not translate into immediate changes that could protect workers and citizens.
Labour leaders explained that fear and violence remain common in many parts of the country, making it difficult for people to go about their normal activities without anxiety. According to the union, these conditions forced workers to take to the streets to draw attention to their concerns.
The congress said the Lagos protest was meant to push the government to respond more quickly and firmly to security challenges, restore public confidence, and ensure the safety of lives and property nationwide.
