The Federal Capital Territory Administration launched a comprehensive security drive on Monday to create a safer environment in Abuja during the festive period. The operation, carried out by the special security team known as Operation Sweep, targeted motor parks and other strategic locations across the city where criminal activities were reported.
The drive followed directives from the FCT Minister, instructing security agencies to eliminate all forms of criminal activity. Authorities said the operation included dismantling illegal motor parks, removing shanties sheltering criminals, and identifying individuals involved in abductions or other illegal activities. Arrests were made during the patrols, and efforts continue to maintain strict monitoring of key locations.
In addition to removing criminals from public spaces, the operation also focused on ensuring that transport operators and event venues verify the identities of those they allow to operate. Officers were deployed to suspected blackspots to maintain a visible presence and deter crime.
The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers at Jabi Motor Park acknowledged the operation, noting that it helped clean up the transport sector and improved safety for commuters. The FCTA pledged that the drive would continue beyond the festive season to maintain security and order throughout the city.
