Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday officially inaugurated Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa as the chairman of Agege Local Government. The ceremony, which also included the swearing-in of Toyin Adejimiwa as a Permanent Secretary, was held at Lagos House in Ikeja.
Obasa, who is the son of the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudasiru Obasa, had been acting as Agege council chairman before his confirmation. His formal appointment follows the resignation of former chairman Tunde Azeez, who stepped down due to health issues. Obasa was unanimously confirmed by councillors after Azeez’s resignation letter was read at a plenary session.
During the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged the new council chairman to focus on grassroots development and ensure his administration aligns with the state’s development plans. The governor described local government as the level of governance closest to the people and called for visible, responsive, and inclusive leadership.
Sanwo-Olu also encouraged Obasa to avoid divisive tendencies and deliver tangible results for residents. The governor praised the contributions of retired permanent secretaries, noting their service as an inspiration to the state’s civil service.
Both Obasa and Adejimiwa pledged to uphold public service values and work toward the progress of Lagos State. Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa had previously shown interest in contesting the chairmanship ahead of the 2025 local government elections but initially faced opposition. His confirmation marks a continuation of his leadership at the Agege council.
The governor expressed confidence that the newly sworn-in officials would justify the trust placed in them and contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth.
