The Federal Capital Territory Administration said FCT Minister Nyesom Wike plans to complete about 60 to 70 per cent of public secondary school renovation works by early 2026 to improve learning conditions in the territory.
The update was given by the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Education Secretariat, Danlami Hayyo, while speaking to journalists shortly after returning to office following a three-week suspension. He explained that the school upgrade programme was part of the current administration’s effort to improve public education facilities across the FCT.
Hayyo said that more than 100 public secondary schools had already been fully renovated under the programme, while work in many other schools was still ongoing or close to completion. He added that the completed projects were expected to be ready for official commissioning within the first quarter of 2026.
He also thanked the minister for reinstating him and said he would continue to support the education plans of the FCT leadership. According to him, the level of work done on school facilities in the territory had not been seen in previous administrations, adding that many schools now had better buildings and learning spaces.
Speaking on his suspension, Hayyo explained that it followed the release of a circular by a director ordering schools to close early over security concerns without proper approval. He said such decisions required clearance from either his office or the minister.
Following his return, Hayyo said one of his first steps would be to organise training programmes for directors and senior officers in the education secretariat. He explained that the training would help them better understand their roles, limits of authority and the need to follow due process.
Hayyo was suspended on November 25 after the circular was issued and was reinstated on December 17 by Minister Nyesom Wike after a review of the matter.
