The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State has scheduled its primary elections for January 25, 2026, ahead of the local government chairmanship and councillorship elections. The party’s state leadership announced the date following a State Executive Council meeting in Abakaliki on Monday.
The party called on political appointees who wish to contest to resign from their government positions in line with Governor Francis Nwifuru’s directive. Officials who did not step down by December 20, 2025, will not be eligible to participate in the primaries. Membership revalidation will begin once the party receives the necessary registration code.
In addition to the primaries, the APC revealed plans to construct a new party secretariat in Ebonyi State. The project is expected to be completed within six months, and the new complex will be larger than the national secretariat. The move is part of efforts to maintain the party’s strong presence in the state.
Currently, the APC controls all major political offices in Ebonyi. The party holds all 171 ward councillor seats, 13 local government chairmanships, all 24 seats in the State House of Assembly, six National Assembly seats, and all three Senate positions. A remaining opposition federal lawmaker, Iduma Igariwey of the Afikpo and Edda federal constituency, has recently joined the APC and registered under his ward in Afikpo.
The announcement signals the party’s intention to retain dominance in the state while preparing for upcoming elections and internal processes that ensure active member participation.
