The leadership of Nigeria’s National Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, has ordered the re-gazetting of the country’s newly passed tax laws amid rising public debate.
The directive was issued through the Clerk to the National Assembly after concerns were raised about differences between the versions of the tax laws passed by lawmakers and those that were officially gazetted. The decision was made known on Friday through a statement released by the House of Representatives spokesperson, Akin Rotimi.
According to the statement, the National Assembly has begun a review of the tax laws in response to issues raised by lawmakers and members of the public. As part of the process, the leadership directed that the laws be re-gazetted and that Certified True Copies of the versions approved by both chambers be issued.
The Assembly explained that the move is administrative in nature and aimed at ensuring that the official records accurately reflect what was passed by lawmakers. It added that the action falls within the constitutional powers of the legislature and is intended to protect the integrity of the legislative process.
The controversy followed claims by a lawmaker, Abdulsamman Dasuki, who alleged that there were discrepancies between the laws approved by the National Assembly and the versions made public. His claims sparked widespread reactions and raised questions about the handling of the tax legislation.
The tax laws, which have attracted strong public attention, are scheduled to take effect from January 2026.
