President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has moved to address the political dispute between the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and the Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, following rising tension between the two leaders.
The intervention was made on Sunday in Makurdi, Benue State, during the wedding reception of Deborah and Samuel Akume, the son of the SGF. Tinubu was represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who delivered the president’s message.
Tinubu said the disagreement between Akume and Alia must not be allowed to continue, stressing that unity among leaders in Benue is necessary for the progress of the state, the North-Central region, and the country. He noted that disputes at that level often affect ordinary people the most.
The president described Akume as a long-serving public officer who has held many key positions in Nigeria, including director of protocol, permanent secretary, governor, senator, minister, and now SGF. He added that Akume’s years of service deserve respect and cooperation rather than conflict.
Tinubu said he felt personally responsible to step in because Benue plays an important role in national stability. He added that differences between leaders should not be allowed to weaken governance or divide the people.
He also praised Benue residents for supporting him during the 2023 presidential election, saying the state chose national interest over regional or religious sentiment at a time when the country was deeply divided.
Speaking earlier, Senator Akume thanked the president for honouring his family by being part of the celebration. He also appreciated Governor Alia for attending the wedding despite his busy schedule.
Governor Alia congratulated the couple and wished them a peaceful and successful marriage, saying the event brought pride to their families and the state.
The ceremony was attended by serving and former ministers, senators, heads of government agencies, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries, including former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom.
