The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, visited members of the Rivers State House of Assembly at their residential quarters. The visit was to thank the lawmakers for supporting President Bola Tinubu and for standing firm on their positions during the political crisis in the state.
Wike said the lawmakers showed courage and clear leadership by defending what they believed was right for Rivers State and the country. He noted that their actions proved they were not weak or easily swayed, adding that they had shown the capacity to lead and make independent decisions as an arm of government.
During the visit, the minister criticised the earlier decision by Governor Siminalayi Fubara to withhold the lawmakers’ entitlements before the declaration of a state of emergency. He described the move as unfair and said elected representatives should not be punished for holding different views.
Wike also spoke about the role of family support in politics, saying strong leaders are often backed by strong spouses and families. He praised the unity among the lawmakers and their families, saying their togetherness helped them remain firm during difficult times.
He further stated that money cannot buy everyone and that there is a limit to what money can achieve in politics. According to him, the Rivers lawmakers proved that integrity and conviction still matter in public life.
The minister said the lawmakers had stood out across the country as a symbol of democracy by refusing to bow to pressure. He added that their decision to maintain and keep their assembly quarters clean despite the challenges they faced showed discipline and good leadership.
Wike urged them to continue standing for what they believe is right and assured them that their efforts and sacrifices would not be forgotten. He said it was important to appreciate those who stood by them and supported them during the crisis, noting that leadership works best when people remain grateful and united.
