As Nigerians prepare to enter 2026, the Nigeria Labour Congress has declared that it will no longer tolerate assurances from the government that do not lead to real action. The labour body said it is fully ready to press for better living conditions for workers and citizens across the country.
In a New Year message released on Tuesday, NLC President Joe Ajaero said the past year had been very difficult for workers and ordinary Nigerians due to economic pressure, insecurity, and rising costs of living. He said these challenges have strengthened the resolve of organised labour to demand fairness, better welfare, and justice.
The congress said it would closely monitor government actions in 2026 and only support leaders and institutions that show clear plans to improve the lives of the people. According to the labour union, promises without action have continued to worsen poverty and hardship, and such approaches will no longer be accepted.
The NLC urged workers and citizens to stay alert, united, and active in holding all levels of government responsible for their actions. It warned against politicians who rely on words without delivery, noting that such practices only benefit a few while the majority suffer.
On wages, the congress called for an urgent review, stating that workers’ earnings must be enough to support a decent standard of living rather than mere survival, especially with inflation still rising. It said it would pursue this demand through lawful and organised means.
The labour body also spoke on security, stressing that the safety of lives and property remains a basic duty of the state. While acknowledging recent improvements, it insisted that the government must do more to ensure peace in all parts of the country.
As 2026 approaches, the NLC called on Nigerians to remain united and committed to collective action, saying that real change can only come through solidarity, organisation, and constant pressure on those in power.
