Confusion arose in Borno State on Tuesday night after reports circulated that soldiers had arrested a suspected suicide bomber in Banki, a town in Bama Local Government Area. The initial information, shared widely among residents, caused alarm in a community already concerned about security issues.
The Nigerian Army stated that troops from Operation Hadin Kai apprehended a suspect near Banki Central Mosque and recovered items believed to be components for an explosive device. The report quickly drew attention and sparked fear among locals.
By Wednesday, the Borno State Police Command clarified that it was their officers, not the army, who made the arrest. They confirmed that the suspect is in police custody and is being questioned. Investigations revealed that the materials found—wires, old phone batteries, scrap gadgets, and shoes—were ordinary items and not intended for making explosives.
Police officials explained that the arrest took place during routine surveillance near the mosque. The suspect was stopped, searched, and taken in for further checks. The case was subsequently transferred to the state police headquarters for a more thorough investigation into the individual’s intentions.
