The Gombe State government has provided N14 million to the families of seven journalists who lost their lives in a road accident on Monday. The journalists were returning from a colleague’s wedding in Kaltungo Local Government Area when the fatal crash occurred.
The payment was made on behalf of Governor Inuwa Yahaya by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Abubakar Njodi. Each family received N2 million to help cover burial expenses and cope with the loss. Officials noted that the accident was a serious blow to the state, as several media professionals were involved in a single incident.
The governor’s office described the deceased journalists as dedicated professionals who had contributed to state communication and public information efforts. Their loss was felt deeply by colleagues and the government alike.
The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Alhassan Yahya, expressed gratitude to the state government for its support. He called for better welfare and insurance for journalists nationwide, noting that media practitioners face dangers while performing their duties. The union plans to launch a new insurance scheme by March to protect journalists’ health and safety.
The General Manager of the Nigerian Television Authority, Gombe, Abubakar Adamu, also mourned the journalists and praised the state government for assisting the bereaved families during the difficult period.
