Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the removal of the 25-storey GNI building on Martins Street after a deadly fire claimed eight lives. The governor made the decision following a site visit, describing the building and nearby area as dangerous for residents and workers.
The fire, which started on the fourth floor, spread to other floors and neighboring shops, causing part of the structure, estimated at seven floors, to collapse. Emergency teams from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, NEMA, LASAMBUS, and other agencies responded immediately, rescuing thirteen people and recovering eight bodies. Some victims were taken to hospitals while others with minor injuries were treated on site.
An information center has been set up at the scene to assist affected families and the public with updates. The governor also closed the nearby market to prevent unauthorized access while recovery and rescue operations continue. Authorities warned that unsafe practices, including the improper use of generators and construction near electricity transformers, increase fire risks in the area.
The GNI building is scheduled for controlled demolition, with neighboring structures also being removed to reduce danger. Governor Sanwo-Olu assured residents and business owners that he will oversee the recovery process and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
This fire at the GNI Plaza is part of a series of Yuletide fire incidents in Lagos, with other fires reported in Ikotun and Arena Market in Oshodi, causing property damage but no fatalities in those cases. Authorities continue to urge traders and property owners to improve fire safety standards to prevent further disasters in busy commercial centers.
