Nyesom Wike has openly stated that allowing Governor Siminalayi Fubara to secure a second term would place his own political future at risk. He made this known during a meeting with political stakeholders in Okrika, where discussions focused on the political direction of Rivers State and plans for future elections.
Wike explained that a clear decision has already been reached within his political circle concerning the next election cycle in the state. He said the decision also takes into account the interests of President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State. According to him, supporting Fubara again would mean repeating a past mistake that could reduce his influence and relevance in state politics.
He added that the matter is no longer open for discussion, as key political actors aligned with his camp have agreed on the direction to follow ahead of the next governorship election. Wike made it clear that his group is prepared to stand by its choice and move forward with its plans.
The statement has further widened the existing divide between Wike and Governor Fubara. It also points to an early and intense political contest in Rivers State, as different camps begin positioning themselves ahead of the next election.
