The African Democratic Congress has appointed a new committee to review its constitution as part of efforts to strengthen internal democracy and improve the party’s operations. The committee is chaired by Etigwe Uwa, SAN, and includes a mix of legal experts, former lawmakers, and party officials from across Nigeria.
The committee was formed to examine the party’s rules, roles of its organs, processes for elections and dispute resolution, membership rights, and compliance with national laws. Its task is to ensure the constitution allows for fairness, inclusion, transparency, and accountability in party activities. The members are expected to consult widely with party stakeholders across all levels and geopolitical zones before submitting their proposals.
The National Chairman of the ADC explained that constitutions guide the conduct and governance of the party, shaping its ideology, managing its operations, and protecting democratic practices within the organization. The review is intended to update and clarify provisions, address current challenges, and align the party’s processes with accepted practices in democratic party management.
The committee has been given 30 days to present an interim report along with proposed amendments to the National Working Committee. Members have expressed commitment to carrying out an inclusive process that considers the views of party members and aims to make the constitution more effective, while remaining true to the party’s founding ideals.
This review comes as the party continues to expand its structures nationwide and prepare for its role in the political landscape leading up to the 2027 elections, following its selection as the coalition platform for opposition leaders seeking to challenge the current government.
