Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North, has announced that he will no longer support Governor Alex Otti ahead of the 2027 general elections and will instead work fully for the All Progressives Congress in the state. He made this known on Thursday at his country home in Igbere, Abia State.
Kalu said his decision followed recent actions by the Abia State Government, which he viewed as hostile. He explained that although he had kept a friendly relationship with Governor Otti and avoided public criticism since 2023, a statement issued by the governor’s media office attacking him forced him to respond politically.
The former Abia governor stated that he played a role in Otti’s emergence as governor during the 2023 election but made it clear that such support would not be repeated in the next election cycle. According to him, he would now channel his energy toward strengthening the APC and ensuring the party wins Abia State in 2027, including delivering votes for President Bola Tinubu.
Kalu also questioned claims of strong performance by the current administration, arguing that many of the projects credited to the government were repairs of roads built during his time as governor. He compared the resources available to both administrations and insisted that his own achievements in office were more visible within a shorter period.
As a serving senator, Kalu said he has continued to attract rural road projects to communities across Abia North and added that similar efforts were lacking in farmlands and rural areas under the present state government.
He further recalled that his administration provided free education and healthcare and noted that his record in office remains open for public review. Kalu maintained that his loyalty now lies firmly with the APC and that he would focus on party growth and victory in the coming elections.
