Senator Jang said Governor Caleb Mutfwang is still a Peoples Democratic Party governor, even though he has defected to the APC. He explained that the mandate Mutfwang is using to govern Plateau State was given by voters under the PDP platform and remains valid until the end of the current term. According to him, Mutfwang can only be regarded as an APC governor if the party presents him again and he wins a fresh mandate in the 2027 election.
The former governor, who led Plateau State between 2007 and 2015, advised the public to stop referring to Mutfwang as an APC governor for now. He maintained that political labels should be tied to the mandate approved by the electorate and not just party switches made during a term in office.
Jang also warned that the growing movement of politicians into one ruling party poses a threat to democracy. He said such a trend could weaken political competition and push the country toward a one-party system if not checked.
He described the PDP as a long-standing political organisation that has survived many challenges since its formation in 1998. He noted that the party has played a key role in Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999 and has produced leaders at different levels of government.
The former senator urged PDP leaders in Plateau State to focus on the welfare of the people rather than personal political interests. He added that strong and active political parties remain necessary for the stability of democracy in the country.
