The Lagos State Government has begun an investigation into the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie, following allegations of poor medical care at a private hospital in the state.
The incident reportedly occurred after the child was taken to a hospital in Lagos for treatment of an illness that was said to be mild at first but later worsened. The situation gained public attention after the child’s mother linked his death to how he was treated during medical care, raising concerns about the conduct of the health facility involved.
The hospital, identified as Euracare, said it has launched an internal review of the case. According to the facility, the child was brought in while already in a critical state after receiving treatment at two other hospitals. The hospital stated that medical care was provided based on standard procedures, but the child died less than 24 hours after admission.
Following the public reaction, the Lagos State Government said it had been officially notified of the incident and described the death as a tragic loss. The state governor directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency to carry out an independent and open investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Officials confirmed that the agency has visited the hospital involved and is examining medical records, treatment steps, and hospital practices. The agency is also working with other medical bodies where necessary to ensure a proper review of the case.
The state government assured the public that the outcome of the investigation will be released and stated that any individual or institution found responsible for negligence or misconduct will face legal consequences in line with existing laws.
