Taiwo Oyedele has revealed that he is facing death threats connected to the rollout of Nigeria’s new tax reform programme. He made this known on Tuesday as public reactions to the reforms continued across the country.
Oyedele explained that the threats began as his committee moved forward with policies aimed at restructuring the tax system, expanding compliance, and increasing government revenue. According to him, resistance to the reforms has gone beyond public criticism, with some individuals choosing intimidation instead of lawful engagement.
He stated that the committee is aware of the tension surrounding the reforms but remains focused on its mandate. Oyedele added that security agencies have been notified about the threats and are taking steps to address the situation.
Despite the challenges, he maintained that the reform process would not be stopped. He said efforts are ongoing to engage citizens, clarify the goals of the tax changes, and address concerns raised by affected groups.
Oyedele noted that the reforms are part of broader efforts to improve Nigeria’s fiscal system and ensure fairness in tax collection, even as debates and opposition continue nationwide.
