Vice President Kashim Shettima led the 156th National Economic Council meeting at Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. This was the second NEC gathering since President Bola Tinubu asked the council to convert grazing reserves into ranches to improve livestock production and prevent conflicts.
The council meeting brought together governors, ministers, and senior presidential aides to discuss a roadmap for the livestock reform program. The committee on livestock development, formed during the previous NEC meeting, presented recommendations and identified states willing to implement the reforms. The committee includes representatives from each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and relevant federal ministries.
The council focused on turning the livestock reform plan into a productive and economically viable program while addressing issues that could lead to disputes between communities and herders. Members were expected to follow through on strategies to improve livestock production and ensure the successful implementation of ranching projects across interested states.
The meeting signals continued government efforts to improve Nigeria’s livestock sector and promote sustainable development.
