Workers employed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration will begin an indefinite strike on Monday, January 19, 2026, leading to the closure of government offices across Abuja and its area councils. The action was announced by the Joint Union Action Congress, which directed workers at all levels to stop work after authorities failed to respond to their demands.
The unions said the decision followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to FCTA management. Despite meetings held during that period, the unions said no concrete response or solution was provided before the deadline elapsed.
The strike is expected to affect all FCTA secretariats, departments, agencies, parastatals, and area councils, bringing public services within the territory to a standstill.
The unions listed several unresolved issues, including unpaid promotion arrears, delayed promotions, and the continued retention of retired directors and permanent secretaries on extended service. They also accused the administration of failing to remit pension contributions and National Housing Fund deductions on behalf of workers.
In addition, the unions raised concerns over the conduct and outcome of the 2024 promotion examinations, stating that many candidates were adversely affected by what they described as a flawed process.
Notices of the planned strike were sent to key FCT officials, including the Minister of State for the FCT, the Chief of Staff, the Head of Service, and the Director of Security Services.
As of the time this report was filed, officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration had not issued any response, as efforts to reach the office of the FCT Head of Service were unsuccessful.
