The Supreme Court has ordered that the fraud trial involving former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido, his two sons, and other accused persons must go on at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The decision allows the lower court to continue hearing the ₦1.35 billion case, which has been delayed for several years due to legal challenges.
Lamido, alongside his sons Aminu and Mustapha, is facing charges linked to the alleged misuse of public funds during his time as governor of Jigawa State. Other individuals are also standing trial in connection with the case. Prosecutors accuse the defendants of working together to divert public money through unlawful financial dealings.
The apex court stepped in after repeated legal moves slowed down progress in the matter. In its ruling, the court held that the case should not be stopped by preliminary objections and must be heard on its full merits.
The defendants have denied all allegations, insisting that they did not commit any wrongdoing. With the Supreme Court’s decision now in place, the Federal High Court is expected to resume proceedings, bringing the case closer to full trial after years of delays.
