Lawmakers in Anambra State have formed an eight-member ad hoc committee to review the 2025 state laws with the aim of improving governance and making the laws more suitable for current realities. The decision followed a motion presented during plenary by the Majority Leader, Ikenna Offordeme, and supported by Jude Umennajiego.
The committee is chaired by Ifeoma Azikiwe, who represents Onitsha North 1, while Anthonia Obi serves as the secretary. Other lawmakers said the review became necessary because many of the existing laws are outdated and no longer reflect present social and legal conditions. They also noted that the last major review of state laws was carried out several decades ago.
Some legislators explained that updating the laws would help residents gain clearer and faster access to legal information, improve justice delivery, and make research and legal references easier. They added that laws introduced or altered during past military administrations also need to be reassessed.
The Speaker of the House, Somtochukwu Udeze, announced that the bill had passed its first and second readings before being referred to the committee for detailed work. He disclosed that the review would cover 221 bills and directed the committee to submit its report within four weeks.
In response, the committee chair assured the House that members would work diligently to revise, update, and properly compile the laws into the 2025 law framework. During the session, lawmakers also praised Governor Charles Soludo for ensuring relative peace and security across the state during the festive season and called for sustained efforts in that direction.
