Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has accused the Department of State Services of imposing harsh restrictions on him following his rearrest in Abuja. According to information from his camp, the DSS has denied him contact with his family, lawyers, and close associates since taking him back into custody.
The allegation surfaced days after Malami was granted bail by a Federal High Court in connection with an ongoing trial involving money laundering charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The case also involves his wife and son. His bail came with strict conditions, raising expectations that he would enjoy limited freedom while preparing his defence.
However, shortly after he was released from Kuje Correctional Centre, DSS operatives reportedly took him back into custody. The agency reportedly claimed that weapons were discovered at his residence, a claim his team has rejected, saying no formal document or official record has been presented to support the allegation.
Malami’s media aide stated that he has remained in isolation since the rearrest, with no access to legal counsel or family members. His team expressed concern that the continued restriction could affect his safety, health, and right to fair legal representation, while also causing emotional distress to his family.
The former minister’s associates also pointed to his recent political activities, including his involvement with the African Democratic Congress and his interest in the 2027 Kebbi State governorship race. They warned that legal processes should not be influenced by political considerations as the case continues.
