The Anambra State Government has ended the practice of closing schools on Mondays due to sit-at-home orders. The decision comes after a state executive council retreat on January 21, 2026, led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
The government directed all school and office staff to attend their duties on Mondays. Any staff who fails to comply will face a deduction of 20 percent of their salary or may forfeit it completely. The directive was issued through a letter signed by Loveline Mgbemena, Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Board, and circulated to board members, local government officers, zonal directors, and departmental heads to ensure enforcement.
The move aims to restore normal educational and administrative activities in the state. The sit-at-home practice had been observed due to the Indigenous People of Biafra’s previous directive, which declared Mondays as days of restricted movement to press for the release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Though the group has since rescinded the directive, some communities continued observing it out of fear.
The government’s action signals a return to regular school and office routines, with a clear warning that staff attendance on Mondays is now mandatory and will be strictly monitored.
