Leaders of the All Progressives Congress, civil society groups, and media professionals gathered at the APC Secretariat in Abuja on Friday to call for urgent intervention by the National Assembly in Rivers State’s political turmoil. The protest focused on the Rivers State House of Assembly’s impeachment attempt against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, which the group described as an abuse of power threatening democratic governance.
The demonstrators urged lawmakers to apply Section 11(4) of the Nigerian Constitution to assume the responsibilities of the Rivers Assembly, arguing that the state legislature had lost credibility and was acting outside the law. They criticized the 27 lawmakers allied with former FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, led by Martins Amaewhule, accusing them of prioritizing personal gain and political maneuvering over public service.
Protest organizers said Governor Fubara has acted responsibly in managing the state and pledged to maintain pressure until the National Assembly responds. They stated that the governor remains committed to the welfare of Rivers residents and that restoring constitutional order is necessary to prevent further political instability.
The protest included civil society representatives, media leaders, and APC officials, who coordinated efforts to ensure their message reached lawmakers and the public.
The political tension in Rivers State follows claims of procedural lawlessness within the House of Assembly, with accusations of attempts to undermine governance through impeachment processes. The coalition called for peaceful mobilization and continued monitoring of legislative actions to protect democratic principles in the state.
