Kano Gov Yusuf sacks Kwankwaso, names new political adviser

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has removed Sunusi Surajo Kwankwaso from his position as Special Adviser on Political Matters and appointed Mustapha Bakwana as his replacement. The decision was made on Saturday and made public in Kano by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature.
The change in the governor’s political team comes less than a day after Yusuf announced his withdrawal from the New Nigerian Peoples Party, the platform on which he won the 2023 governorship election. The governor explained that his exit from the party was due to ongoing internal disputes and legal battles that had affected unity within the party across the country.
Following his departure from the NNPP, the governor began adjusting his administration, starting with the removal of Kwankwaso and the appointment of Bakwana to take over political advisory duties. The move is seen as part of efforts to reposition his government amid shifting political alliances in Kano State.
The development has continued to draw attention within the state’s political space, as parties and political actors react to the governor’s recent decisions and their possible effect on future elections.
