The Defence Headquarters said it has concluded investigations into some senior and junior officers accused of acts that go beyond normal breaches of military rules, including an alleged plan to overthrow the government. The development follows the arrest of 16 officers in October 2025 for violations of service regulations and acts considered contrary to military conduct.
The officers, whose ranks range from Captain to Brigadier General, were arrested after intelligence reports raised concerns about secret meetings and actions believed to threaten national stability. At the time, reports linking the arrests to an alleged coup plot and the cancellation of the October 1 Independence Day parade were dismissed by military authorities as attempts to stir public tension, with officials insisting the matter was an internal disciplinary issue.
Providing an update, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said a full investigation had now been completed using standard military procedures. He explained that the probe carefully reviewed all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected officers.
According to him, the findings showed that some of the officers have cases to answer over allegations linked to plotting against the government. He added that the investigation report has been forwarded to the appropriate higher authority in line with existing military regulations.
Uba said the officers found wanting will be formally brought before relevant military judicial panels to face trial under the Armed Forces Act and other service rules. He noted that the process is aimed at ensuring accountability while observing fairness and due process.
He further stated that the actions being taken are purely disciplinary and part of ongoing efforts to maintain order, discipline, and effectiveness within the Armed Forces. The military leadership, he said, remains committed to professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority as it handles the matter.
