The Ogun State Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees has given Governor Dapo Abiodun a 14-day deadline to restore full local government administration in the state or face an indefinite strike by workers.
The decision was reached on Wednesday during the union’s executive council meeting held at its secretariat in Abeokuta. The union said the ultimatum followed dissatisfaction with the state government’s response to earlier demands raised by local government workers.
NULGE stated that despite existing court rulings, directives from the National Assembly, and instructions from President Bola Tinubu, local governments in Ogun State are yet to operate independently. The union accused the state government of interfering in council affairs, which it said has weakened grassroots administration.
According to the union, the situation has led to poor office facilities, deteriorating infrastructure, and low staff morale, affecting service delivery across local councils. It also complained that major sources of local government revenue, including motor park fees, mobile advertisement charges, and tenement rates, have been taken over by the state, leaving councils short of funds.
NULGE further raised concerns about the refusal to place Heads of Local Government Administration on a consolidated salary structure, unlike what operates in the state civil service and in nearby states such as Osun and Ondo.
The union warned that it may withdraw from an existing agreement on the contributory pension scheme signed with the state government and the Nigeria Labour Congress, alleging failure by the government to meet its obligations.
While setting February 17, 2026, as the date for possible industrial action if its demands are ignored, the union said it remains open to talks with the state government to resolve the issues peacefully.
