The House of Representatives has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently increase security operations in parts of Gombe State following deadly attacks by bandits on several communities.
The call came after lawmakers adopted a motion raised by Bello Kumo, the Chief Whip of the House and representative of Akko Federal Constituency, during plenary in Abuja. The motion focused on recent violent attacks in Garin Galadima, Pindiga, Garin Jaji, and Laro communities in Akko Local Government Area.
According to the House, the attacks led to the killing of six residents, while about 20 others were abducted and are still being held by the attackers. Lawmakers noted that homes and properties were destroyed, residents were forced to flee, and many families lost their means of livelihood, leaving the affected areas in fear and uncertainty.
The House warned that the situation could worsen if urgent steps are not taken to protect lives and property, as required by the Nigerian Constitution. As a result, lawmakers urged the President to direct the Chief of Defence Staff to launch a joint security operation involving both air and ground forces to locate bandits, dismantle their camps, and prevent further attacks.
In addition to military action, the House asked the Inspector-General of Police to deploy Mobile Police Force units to Akko Local Government Area to restore order and stop further violence. Lawmakers also called on the National Emergency Management Agency and the North-East Development Commission to provide immediate relief materials to victims of the attacks.
To ensure follow-up, the House directed its committees on Defence, Army, Air Force, Police, Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, and Legislative Compliance to monitor the implementation of the resolutions and submit weekly reports until normalcy returns to the affected communities.
