The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have announced plans to stage a peaceful solidarity rally on February 3 in Abuja in support of workers under the Joint Union Action Committee. The rally is aimed at backing employees of the Federal Capital Development Authority who are currently on strike over unpaid salaries and unresolved welfare concerns.
The decision was made known in a joint statement issued in Abuja by the leadership of both labour centres. According to the unions, the action is meant to show collective support for FCDA workers who began an indefinite strike on January 19 after a seven-day ultimatum issued earlier in the month expired without a response from management.
Since the strike began, major government offices, including the FCTA Secretariat and FCDA facilities, have remained shut. The workers insist that their action became necessary due to long-standing grievances related to pay and working conditions.
The labour centres stated that the planned rally would be peaceful and lawful, and would be directed at the FCDA. They instructed all affiliated unions and state councils to mobilise members fully for the exercise.
The NLC and TUC also reassured workers in the Federal Capital Territory that they would continue to stand with them until their demands are addressed, adding that pressure and intimidation would not stop labour actions. They described the struggle as legitimate and said support for the striking workers would remain firm until a resolution is reached.
