The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-South zone has described Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, as a national leader of the party. George Turnah, the South-South PDP secretary, made this known while discussing the ongoing internal challenges within the party.
Turnah explained that Wike does not head any faction but exercises his rights as a member of the PDP, including the freedom to make political choices. He noted that in previous years, Wike led the G5 governors but not all governors in the group followed his lead in supporting specific candidates. For instance, the former Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, did not align with Wike’s choice in the 2023 presidential election.
The South-South secretary added that Wike has consistently maintained his political stance without declaring authority over other party members or factions. Turnah said party members should respect Wike’s position while also allowing others to exercise their own choices within the democratic framework of the PDP.
This statement comes amid growing debates and controversies over internal party democracy and the influence of party leaders on member decisions.
