Magistrates in Cross River State have announced plans to restart their indefinite strike on February 9, after the state government failed to meet their outstanding requests. The decision follows a general meeting held on January 30 by the Cross River chapter of the Magistrates’ Association of Nigeria.
The magistrates had previously suspended a strike after assurances from the state government that their demands would be addressed. While some of their requests, including promotions and regularization with financial benefits, were implemented, other key issues remain unresolved. These include a 50 percent increase in salaries, provision of official vehicles, accommodation, renovation of court facilities, and payment of salary arrears dating back to 2019.
The association also raised concerns over the low monthly impress allowance of N15,000, which they said is far below the amount received by magistrates in neighboring states. With the unresolved issues causing hardship and affecting the efficient delivery of justice, the magistrates decided to resume the industrial action.
The government’s inaction has prompted the association to notify the state of their plan to restart the strike without further notice. The magistrates hope the renewed action will push the government to address all pending demands and improve the welfare of judicial staff across the state.
This development comes amid ongoing efforts by judicial bodies nationwide to secure better working conditions and ensure fair compensation for court officials.
