The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday said political activities in Abuja will not slow down development projects across the city, even as preparations continue for the Area Council Elections scheduled for February 21.
Wike gave the assurance while inspecting several ongoing infrastructure projects in different parts of the FCT. He said governance must remain focused on the needs of residents and should not be interrupted by political events.
He explained that the FCT Administration would continue to carry out projects as planned, noting that consistent work on infrastructure was key to meeting the expectations of residents and supporting the agenda of the Federal Government.
During the inspection, the minister visited the Institutional Research Road, which connects Nile University, the Body of Benchers, and nearby institutions. The road also serves as an alternative route to the older access road near the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission headquarters. He said the project was progressing well and was expected to be completed by the end of May, with plans for its inauguration later in the year.
Wike also inspected the Body of Benchers extension building, where he said construction had reached about 80 per cent, with only finishing works such as landscaping left.
The inspection tour further covered a major road corridor stretching from Euclid Road through Bright Road to Tungan Madaki, spanning about seven kilometres. Wike said the project included a large conference hall and a major bridge and would improve access for communities that had lacked proper road connections for years.
He added that the scope of the road project was expanded after discussions with local residents, who requested that compensation for affected farmlands should also come with better access to the city. According to him, contractors handling the projects have assured the FCT Administration that major sections would be completed between late May and early June.
The minister said regular inspections would continue to ensure quality work and timely completion of all ongoing projects across Abuja.
