Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Saturday, February 7, 2026, in Abuja, questioned the sincerity of politicians who openly speak against godfatherism while allowing close family members to benefit from political influence.
Akpabio made the remarks at the public presentation of a book titled The Burdens of Legislators in Nigeria, written by former Senator Effiong Bob. The event took place at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in Kado, Abuja, and was attended by political leaders, including former Senate President David Mark, who chaired the occasion.
While reacting to conversations on godfatherism at the event, Akpabio referred to a situation where the son of a former senator currently serves in a state House of Assembly. He said it was difficult to reconcile strong opposition to godfatherism with actions that appear to support it, noting that public positions should align with personal conduct.
He argued that credibility in the fight against godfatherism begins with individual choices and sacrifices, adding that it sends mixed signals when politicians condemn the practice while benefiting from political family ties.
Akpabio, however, noted that the lawmaker involved was performing his duties well and had earned the trust of colleagues, as shown by his return for a second term and leadership role in the assembly.
The Senate President used the occasion to stress that public office holders must act in ways that match their public statements if they truly want to address issues within Nigeria’s political system.
