The Kano State House of Assembly on Saturday, February 7, 2026, denied reports claiming that lawmakers had begun moves to impeach the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, saying no such plan exists.
The Assembly, through the spokesperson to the Speaker, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, said the reports making the rounds were untrue and were capable of causing unnecessary fear and tension among residents of the state. He explained that there was no discussion, motion, or arrangement within the House aimed at removing the deputy governor from office.
According to him, the lawmakers remain focused on their responsibilities, including lawmaking and oversight duties, and are not involved in political schemes or rumours. He added that the deputy governor continues to carry out his official duties and still enjoys the backing of the Assembly.
The House also advised members of the public and media organisations to always verify information before spreading it, warning that false reports could threaten political stability in the state.
The deputy governor has not reacted publicly to the reports. However, sources within the Kano State Government said he remains active in government activities and continues to participate in official programmes.
The controversy followed comments made last week by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, who urged the deputy governor to step down after he failed to defect with his principal from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. Despite the comment, the Assembly insisted that it has no plan to remove the deputy governor.
